Os Phrasal verbs, ou verbos frasais, são verbos simples combinados com outras palavras, geralmente preposições ou advérbios, muito comuns na língua inglesa. Um problema que quem está aprendendo Inglês costuma encontrar com os frasais é o fato de eles não terem tradução literal, ao pé da letra, coisa que a gente adora fazer. Por exemplo: enquanto “call” significa “chamar ou ligar pra alguém”, “call off” significa cancelar alguma coisa, enquanto ao pé da letra seria algo como “chamar fora” – o que não faz o menor sentido.
Uma das curiosidades sobre os verbos frasais é o fato de que algumas construções permitem a intercalação de informações com os elementos do verbo. Por exemplo: o verbo “blow up” significa explodir, mas o objeto a ser explodido na frase virá entre as duas palavras. Então, se eu vou explodir uma bomba, eu digo “I’m gonna blow this bomb up”.
Outros frasais permitem ambas as construções. Por exemplo: o verbo “turn on” significa “ligar” algo. Se eu quiser dizer “eu vou ligar a televisão”, eu posso dizer tanto “I’ll turn on the TV” quanto “I’ll turn the TV on.” O mesmo serve pra “turn off”, que significa desligar.
